In an interview with The Hindu, she talked about her motivation to tell the story of the people who took part in the riots. She began working on this book in January 2015. Laul's most recognized work that got her mainstream attention is her book titled The Anatomy of Hate which was originally published in 2018. The documentary talks about the woes faced by the truck drivers, namely, being chased by armed insurgents and the harassment faced by the police and corrupt administration. Laul has worked on the news documentary titled Running on Empty that documented the life of Indian truck drivers. In 2014, she wrote an article which describing the change in government after the 2014 General Elections in India. In August of 2009, she did a series for an Indian news magazine named Open which reported on the ongoing elections in Afghanistan in the time of the Taliban. During this time, she reported on topics such as the aftermath of the 2002 Gujarat riots. Laul began her journalism career by joining NDTV in 1996.
